One of the core tenets of African Girls Can is volunteerism. We are an all volunteer organization. We are proud that our students, on their own initiative, have come up with “give back” activities. They visited a primary school to talk to girls about the importance of staying in school and a local health clinic to offer cleaning services. AGC also contributed to relief efforts in a rural area of Eastern Uganda that experienced a flood in September, 2022!
Winnie and Vivian speak to a crowded room of primary school girls about why they should continue on to secondary school (and beyond…Winnie is in nursing school and Vivian also had post-secondary training in architecture). The young women from African Girls Can are living, breathing role models for the younger girls in their community.
On their school break Nancy, Winnie, and Rebecca volunteered their time at Aliwang Health Center, which is operated by the Catholic mission that also runs the primary school that Nancy and Rebecca attended in Northern Uganda. Perhaps this community outreach helped determine their next step... all three young women progressed to nursing school.
Heavy rainfall in the Eastern region of Uganda in July, 2022 caused flash floods and mudslides, resulting in casualties and extensive damage. When it was time for kids there to return to school in September, AGC Co-Founder Phoebe Mulinde traveled to the area to distribute school supplies at a school whose kids had lost their homes. |
